***Okay so the quality isn't perfect but it was only a test thing and I don't really get webcams. But I hope you enjoy the video even though it's a bit dodgy.***
Well the page 99 test was created
by Ford Maddox Ford as a way to test the quality of a book you may want to
read. Apparently page 99 is the point in the book where the author should have
hit their stride and hopefully we’re not so far in we hit spoilers.
In Secret Vampire, Poppy thought
the summer would last forever. Then she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Now
Poppy's only hope for survival is James, her friend and secret love. A vampire
in the Night World, James can make Poppy immortal. But first they both must
risk everything to go against the laws of Night World.
“Again, she felt the beginning of a reaction in James, but just as she was chasing it, he gently pulled his wrist back. “You’d better not take any more tonight,” he said, and his real-world voice sounded strange to Poppy’s ears. It wasn’t as much James as his mental voice, and now she couldn’t really feel him properly. They were two separate beings. The isolation was awful.”
Okay, so let’s start with the synopsis: the
synopsis is very short. I’m thinking that it’s because this is an omnibus
edition and they had to get 3 blurbs on the back of the poor book. And I think
it suffers because of it. I took the blurb for my ‘On the Back of The Book’ section off of Goodreads purely because
it was slightly longer. So let’s talk about the GR blurb and compare with my
blurb. The GR blurb is more detailed to be honest with you, mine is just a
single sentence that doesn’t tell us much at all. Not by much though. However
the GR blurb bigs up the romance and the PNR genre. I do think that of the two
it’s the blurb that would get more attention.
The cover: Now I find the cover to be very meh. It
follows the trend of beautiful girl on YA book cover syndrome. Now while that’s
all good and well by this point in time I’m starting to find it boring. It’s
such a cliché cover, how about cover artists actually do some designing? I
wouldn’t be so “Eurgh!” about it if this wasn’t a three in one edition. The
books all seem to have different MCs so having the one girl makes no sense
because she could be anyone! However as girls go she’s very pretty. Her eyes
look gorgeous. The font is very simple and not worth noting in my opinion. So I’ll
just skirt over it.
The paragraph: The paragraph... hmmm... I don’t
know, I really don’t. It seems to be one of those over dramatic YA romance
moments. Now due to the title being ‘Secret
Vampire’ I think it’s safe to say Poppy has been drinking James’ blood. The
end of the paragraph is intriguing, I have to say, the idea that she couldn’t “feel
him properly” is not one I’ve encountered before, though I suppose it’s to do
with telepathy. “Mental voice” and “real-world voice” are such odd and simple
ways of differentiating them. I personally would rather have seen the author
say something like “his speaking voice sounded strange to Poppy’s ears.” “Real-world
voice” sounds so immature. The last two sentences feel a bit whiny to me and
that’s frustrating. It’s hardly isolation if he’s still there. I guess I need
to read the book to find out exactly what’s happening here. However from that
one paragraph I’m not sure if I’d have bought the book. Now that could be a problem couldn’t it?
What do you guys think of the sound of Secret
Vampire?

The Nightworld series is really good!!! It gets better after the first book, which is a bit dramatic I guess I loved it though. Especially because all three books have a different angel! All characters are different!
